Check the State Railway of Thailand timetable for the Kanchanaburi-Nam Tok train. The 12:55 PM departure from Kanchanaburi Station is ideal.

Where to Stay Tonight

Riverside, Kanchanaburi Town (Guesthouse or boutique hotel (e.g., U Inchantree Kanchanaburi, Ploy Guesthouse))

Centrally located for today's historical sites and evening activities, with easy access to restaurants and the train station for tomorrow.

For the best train experience, sit on the left side (facing the engine) when departing Kanchanaburi to get the cliff-side views over the river.
Day 1 Budget: $65

A full day of natural adventure hiking through the seven-tiered Erawan Waterfalls, swimming in its iconic turquoise pools, and exploring nearby caves.
Morning
Hike Erawan Waterfall Tiers 1-4
Arrive early to beat the crowds at Erawan National Park. The hike to the fourth tier is moderately easy, passing stunning cascades and perfect swimming holes. Don't forget your swimsuit to take a dip in the crystal-clear, fish-filled pools.

Afternoon
Hike to Tiers 5-7 & Phra That Cave

Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes for the slippery rocks on the upper trails.
Evening
Relaxed Dinner Back in Town
Head to the main street (Saengchuto Road) for a wide variety of local restaurants. Try Keeree Mantra for delicious Thai food in a garden setting.

Where to Stay Tonight

Kanchanaburi Town (Same as previous night)

Convenient base for day trips. After a tiring day of hiking, you'll appreciate not having to move your luggage.

Buy snacks and water in town before heading to the park. Food options inside are limited and more expensive. The small fish in the pools give a harmless 'fish spa' nibble!
Day 2 Budget: $75
3

River Kwai Serenity

Sai Yok & Hellfire Pass
A day exploring more remote and poignant sections of the Death Railway, followed by a peaceful long-tail boat journey on the River Kwai.
Morning
Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum & Walking Trail
Journey north to this profoundly moving site. The excellent museum provides context before you walk the original rail bed through the infamous 'Hellfire Pass' cutting, proof of the extreme hardship endured. The walk is quiet and reflective.
2.5-3 hours Free (donation appreciated)
Rent a private car or join a tour for this trip, as public transport is infrequent. The museum provides audio guides.
Lunch
Local restaurants near Sai Yok

Afternoon
Sai Yok Noi Waterfall & Long-tail Boat on the Kwai
Visit the picturesque Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, which flows directly into the River Kwai. Then, hire a private long-tail boat from the nearby pier for a serene 1-2 hour cruise. Glide past jungle scenery, small villages, and limestone cliffs.
3 hours $25-30 (for boat hire, negotiable)
Boat hire is easily arranged at the pier. Agree on the duration and price before departure.
Evening
Farewell Riverside Meal
For your final night, enjoy a special dinner at a resort with outstanding river views, such as The FloatHouse River Kwai Resort's restaurant (accessible by their free boat shuttle from the pier).

Where to Stay Tonight

Kanchanaburi Town (Same as previous nights)

Allows for a relaxed final evening and easy departure the next morning, whether by bus or train.

If time allows after the boat ride, stop at the Krasae Cave, where a section of the original wooden Death Railway trestle remains and a beautiful golden Buddha sits inside the cave. It's on the way back to town.
Day 3 Budget: $80

Practical Information

Getting Around

For Days 2 & 3, you'll need transport to sites outside town. The most flexible option is renting a scooter (if experienced) or hiring a private car with driver for the day (approx. $50-60). Songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) are a cheaper but less convenient option for Erawan. Tuk-tuks are fine for getting around town. The Death Railway train is part of the experience on Day 1.

Book Ahead

Book your accommodation in Kanchanaburi in advance, especially during high season (Nov-Feb). Consider booking a private car driver for Day 3 (Hellfire Pass) through your guesthouse.

Packing Essentials

Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes for Erawan, swimsuit & quick-dry towel, sunscreen & insect repellent, hat, light rain jacket, modest clothing for temple/museum visits (covered shoulders/knees), reusable water bottle.

Total Budget

$220 (for 3 days, excluding international travel to/from Kanchanaburi)

Customize Your Trip

Budget Version

Stick to songthaews for transport to Erawan and skip the private car to Hellfire Pass by joining a shared minivan tour. Eat exclusively at local markets and street stalls. Stay in a basic fan-room guesthouse. This can bring the daily budget down to $30-40.

Luxury Upgrade

Stay at a luxury riverside resort like The FloatHouse River Kwai. Hire a private car and guide for all three days. Book a sunset dinner cruise on the Kwai. Upgrade meals to fine dining at resort restaurants. Include a spa treatment after the Erawan hike.

Family-Friendly

Focus on the bridge, train ride, and the lower, easier tiers of Erawan Waterfall (Tiers 1-3 are very child-friendly). Visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre museum, which is more interactive than JEATH. Opt for a shorter, calmer boat trip. Choose accommodation with a swimming pool.
